Why do we need challenge age

We live in challenging times, economically and socially, where the effects of Covid-19 has had profound effects on how we interact with others and how ordinary life is taking place. In many instances, transactions with family, friends and the workplace have moved to virtual space leaving many adults without the skills to fully participate. In addition, some older adults are more vulnerable and have had to withdraw from social life to protect themselves or others that they live with leaving them isolated. Challenge Age has been designed to enable participants to gain the skills they need to fully participate in the new order but also to challenge themselves to realise greater personal fulfilment and confidence. Undertaking the programme will support well-being (both physical and mental) and support positive lifestyle or new employment outcomes. It is about ageing positively, gaining new skills and new social networks to achieve self-fulfilment.

Challenge Age is supported by Isle of Wight Council through its Active Innovation Grant and through its Adult and Community Learning Grant

Where can you undertake Challenge Age

Challenge Age is a national programme for adults 50+ and will be available from 2021 across the UK. Over a third of the UK population is over 50 (34%) and this is rising. From September 2020 Challenge Age will be piloted on the Isle of Wight. The pilot will test out the connectivity concept and the model of learning using peer mentoring and support.

Isle of Wight is well-placed to pilot this programme as there is a high proportion of adults 50+ (40%) and there is a strong community support for the use of digital technologies and an improving infrastructure for superfast broadband and 5G mobile networks.

To get started all you will need is access to a suitable device (laptop, smartphone, tablet or PC). Through telephone coaching the Challenge Age Team will help you set up your device safely so that you can fully access the programme.

Access to the programme will be through application to the Course Team but why don’t you drop us a line and arrange a call back
